Learning to save lives
On Tuesday 27 of June 2023 we went to an unused classroom( room 16) to be greeted by Nikki, a St Johns worker who comes around school to teach you what to do in an emergency. We all went in knowing nothing about what to do in an emergency but walked out feeling like pros.
Nikki taught us so much and we are very thankful for everything she taught us. We learned that if someone has fainted, you need to talk to them and see if they respond, if not rub their collarbone to see if they respond then check if their breathing by putting your your check in their face to see if they are breathing,if they are still not breathing then you need to call 111 and ask for an ambulance and give them all the information needed, then you need to start C.P.R. by putting your hands on top of each other and starting to press up and down, this will make the heart start to pump blood again. You need to do it in the rhythm of row row row your boat. She taught us the doctors ABC and it goes like this D.R.S.A.B.C. it stands for Danger,Response, Airway,Breathing,CPR. She also taught us the signs of a stroke F.A.S.T standing for Face,Arms,Speech and take action an we go to practice CPR on a mannequin
And then after that she taught us how to do the safe side position and we learned what to do in other things that could happen in the future. So the safe side position if someone is lying on the ground unconscious, so if their lying on the ground put their furthest arm close behind their ear and the closest side will be on the stomach of the person, then the closest foot will be close to your bottom, and then put your hand on their knee and on their shoulder and pull them over to the side.

Today we have been learning how to make and article, we made one about Epro-8 at Pūtahi School, It was realy fun and the article will explain it all
Enjoy 🔥
On Wednesday the 14th of June every class from Pūtahi Mātāhae syndicate competed one class at a time. On Thursday 10 students from each class competed to battle it out to see who will make one of the two teams which they will go to compete in the external competition against other schools.
This is what some of the contestants had to say, (Isabelle) “At first I thought it was gonna be very boring but it turned out to be fun” she then made it through to one of the 2 teams going to the External competition at Kaiapoi North. Lisbon, another participant said “At first I thought we were going to be building legos, then I realized that we were making proper structures with proper metal rods.” Then went on to sadly not make one of the External competition team’s.
Last year Miss Wing (the Epro-8 coordinator) said when the 2 Pūtahi teams made it to the semi finals, “I am very excited to see the teams working so well” and this year said “ I see potential in both teams to make it to the semi finals” and this year the 2 Pūtahi Mātāhae teams will enter the External competition ready to win.
